Abstract :
Purpose: To compare the Nd: YAG capsulotomy rates associated with nine different posterior chamber foldable acrylic intraocular lenses.Settings: Retrospective record review study.Material and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed and documented the rates of Nd: YAG capsulotomy done in 3782 eyes after phacoemulsification and foldable IOL implantation. The type of IOL is documented. Nine different foldable IOLs were used AcrySof three piece (1080 eyes), Ocuflex acrylic (923eyes). Omniflex (513 eyes), Acrygel (397 eyes), Lenstec acrylic (258 eyes), Survision acrylic (224 eyes), Sensar optiEdge AR40e (199 eyes) Eyecryl (118 eyes), Human acrylic (70 eyes). Results: 310 (8.2%) of operated eyes did Nd: YAG capsulotomy. And its rate was as follows: Sensar (1.5%), AcrySof MA (4.3%), Eyecryl (5.1%), Lenstec acrylic (5.8%), Omniflex (7.4%), Acrigel (11.1%), Ocuflex (12.2%), Survision acrylic (13.4%), Human acrylic (21.4%).Conclusion: Nd: YAG capsulotomy rate was significantly lower with Sensar, AcrySof and Eyecryl (Biotec). The study revealed that the choice of intraocular foldable IOL influence the rate of posterior capsule opacification and consequently the rate of Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy.
