Vulvar Self Exam as a Tool to Perceive Genital Learning Needs of Adolescent Girls

Objectives: The study aims at perceiving the genital learning needs of the adolescent girls about the female genital system. Subjects and Methods: Design: Pre-post-intervention study design was used in the present study. Setting: The study was carried out in the Faculty of Nursing-Menoufiya University. Subjects: A purposive sample was used for conduction of this study. It included (47) students. Data Collection Tools: An interview sheet was used. It considered by socio-demographic characteristics, external female genital system, and the vulvar self exam. Statistical Analysis: All data collected was coded and entered on Microsoft Access database XP and analyzed with SPSS version 13. Data were presented using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages. Results: According to the current results, the majority of the studied sample was rural students and they had a poor knowledge as regard to the external female genital organs and vulvar self exam, in the pretest. While, in post and retention tests, they achieved a very high level of knowledge in aprox- imately all prviously mentined items. Conclusion: The study concluded that, Adolescent Girl s reproductive rights and health needs still remained largely neglected. They need lot information pertaining to their genital system, and vulvar self exam must perform it regularly in purpose to detect any vulvar diseases as early as possible.
