Abstract :
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of nitric oxide donors for preventing pre-eclampsia and its complications in patients with high risk to develop preeclampsia. Material and Methods: Fifty high risk patients for pre- eclampsia divided into two groups: Group 1 (25 patients) with nitroglycerine patch lOmg replaced daily from sixth week and extended up to the end of the fourteenth week. Group II comprised 25 patients who did not received nitroglycerine patches as a control group. Results: There was no significant difference in the inci- dence of development of mild preeclampsia in (G I) was 25% and 19.8% in (G 2) (p=0.52), the incidence of severe preec- lampsia was much lower 12.4% in (G 1) in comparison to 32% in (G 2), however, it did not reach statistical significance (p=0.13) Relative Risk = 0.37 95% (CI=0.08 to 1.57). Conclusion: Nitric oxide donors are relatively cheap, available and the present study showed a trend towards reduction in incidence and severity of pre-eclampsia and needs to be further studied with larger sample size.
