Abstract :
Objective: To determine the prevalence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in women with grossly normal cervices undergoing hysterectomy for begnin disorders. Methods: Patients with clinically normal cervices who were referred to our department between May 2007 and February 2009 and who needed hysterectomy for a benign indication were asked to participate in the study. 83 women were found eligible. Preoperatively all women had detailed history taking, general examination, local examination, and cervical smears (Pap test) for detection of CIN. All 83 women had total hysterectomy carried out. Results: Abnormal cervical smears were noted in 11 (13.2%) patients with intraepithelial neoplasia found in 6 patients (7.2%) out of the 83 studied women. Conclusion: Women undergoing hysterectomy for benign disorders and who have clinically normal cervices on examination should be offered cervical evaluation by Pap test as part of their routine preoperative investigations.
