Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether protocoldirected weaning applied by nurses in the Intensive Care Unit at Odense University Hospital in Denmark (ICUD) can be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Zagazig University Hospital in Egypt (ICUE), where weaning is physiciandirected. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either protocol-directed or physician-directed weaning from mechanical ventilation the results of the study referred that using protocol guidance, weaned patients from mechanical ventilation more safely and more quickly than in the physician-directed weaning employed at ICUE. This was due both to initiating the weaning process earlier and shortening its duration. ICU length of stay, risk of VAP and hospital mortality rate were lower in the group receiving protocol-directed weaning.
