Abstract :
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of depression among diabetic patients in Kuwait Oil Company Hospital in Kuwait. Patients and Methods: This is a descriptive cross sectional study to estimate the prevalence of depression of 450 diabetic patients attending to diabetic Clinic Kuwait Oil Hospital in Al-Ahmadi governorate by using an interview questionnaire and Zung self depressive scale. Results: We found that the prevalence of depression among the studied diabetic patients is 136pts (30.2%). Females are more affected by depression than males. Female 96pts (70.6%) and male 40pts (29.4%). 120pts (88.2%) of depressed patients have fasting blood sugar 7.0mmol. We found that diabetic patients on insulin therapy are more affected by depression 64pts (47%) more than diabetic patients on oral hypoglycemic drugs 49pts (36.5%) and 23pts (16.9) on mixed therapy. Conclusion: Depression is a common and often disturbing problem in diabetic patients, but it does not receive appropriate attention. Our study showed that 30.2% of diabetic patients have depressive disorders.
