Abstract :
Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) with percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) in the treatment of vertebral compression fracture (VCF). Methods: Forty-nine patients with vertebral compression fracture were treated by percutaneous vertebroplasty (n=28) or percutaneous kyphoplasty (n=21). The anterior midline and posterior heights of vertebral body, preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS), operation time and amount of blood loss were compared between the 2 groups. Results: There was statistical significant difference in vertebral height between the two groups (p 0.01). No significant difference was seen in VAS, operation time and blood loss between the two groups (p 0.05). ConcIusions: Percutaneous kyphoplasty and percutaneous vertebroplasty have similar therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of vertebral compression fracture with minimal invasion, less operation time and blood loss. However, kyphoplasty is superior in the recovery of vertebral height.
