Emotional Intelligence and its Relation to Nursing Performance among Nurses at Mansoura University Hospital and Urology and Nephrology Center

Emotional intelligence is now considered to have a greater impact on the performance of nurses and groups as measured against traditional intelligence. Emotionally intelligent nurses in the organization result in better overall organizational performance. The emotionally intelligent nurses better understand and relate to other peoples. Moreover, emotional intelligence is an important predictor of key organizational outcomes. According to the theory of emotional intelligence, a nurse who is able to understand and is aware of his or her own feelings, and controls stress, negative emotions, and feelings of frustration can certainly have better relationships with colleagues and supervisors. Aim of the Study: Explore the relationship between the emotional intelligence of nurses and their performance at Mansoura University Hospital and Urology and Nephrology Center. Methods: A correlation analytical design was utilized to attain the aim of the present study. The study sample composed of 95 nurses. Data was collected through questionnaire consist of two tools; first was Emotional Quotient Profile Questionnaire, the second was the Observation Checklist. Results: The relation between emotional intelligence of nurses and their performance was negative and not significant relationship. Recommendation: Integrating emotional intelligence into the nursing curriculum as an opportunity for student nurses to better understand themselves and then be more effective in forming better relationships with patients.
