Abstract :
Background: Neoptrin is secreted by activated macrophages. Its serum level reaches peak with appearance of clinical manifestations of the viral infection and declines by convalescence. Neoptrin level can be a marker of HBV activity and replication and hence, need for treatment.Patients and Methods: Ninty patients were included in this study. Group I (30 healthy volunteers). Group II (30 patients with HBV DNA 2000IU/ml and normal enzymes, inactive carrier) Group III (30 patients with HBV DNA 2000IU/ml and elevated liver enzymes, active hepatitis). Results: Neoptrin level was higher in Group II than Group I (2.97±1.02 vs 0.44±0.33ng/L p 0.001) and more higher in Group III (14.1±9.07ng/L). Neoptrin is significantly correlated to ALT, AST and HBV DNA in serum (r=0.94 in Group II and 0.96 in Group III p 0.001).Conclusion: Neoptrin is a good marker for activity in chronic HBV infection.
