Swan Ganz Catheter for Diagnosis of Transient Central Diabetes Insipidus after Mitral Valve Replacement

Transient Diabetes Insipidus (DI) occurring in a pati-ent undergoing open heart surgery is a rare occurrence. In this case report, we are presenting a 30 years old female patient with past history of stroke who under-went redo mitral valve replacement developed poly-uria. The diagnosis of hypovolemia was made with the help of swan ganz catheter. The patient responded to desmopressin and completely recovered seven days after surgery. It is possible that transient cerebral is-chemia given her history of Stroke resulted in the dys-function of osmotic receptors in the hypothalamus or hypothalamus – pituitary axis during Cardiopulmo-nary Bypass (CPB). Therefore, we concluded that cen-tral DI is a probable cause of polyuria after CPB.
