The evapotranspiration of selected plants for water acquisition and replenishment

Transpiration involves the transfer of water vapour from the land or canopy surface to the atmosphere by plants through the leaves stomatas, a process also known as evapotranspiration. In climatology and hydrology transpiration accounts for the movement of water within a plant and the subsequent loss of water as vapor through stomata in its leaves. The plant physiology such as size, surface area of leaves and growth stage play an important role in transpiration. This paper presents the findings of a study which identified the influence of transpiration as a deuteration (hydration) process. The methods used were a week long laboratory and field work involving the weighing technique to gauge the quantity of water loss from the Misai Kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus) herb, a member of the Labiatae. The findings demonstrated that the transpiration by means of Misai Kucing was capable of transfering water in large quantities, and as such was capable of impacting urban sustainability. In other words, it was able to serve not just as an indicator of the potentiality of deuteration when used as a health end product , but also and more importantly, as a producer of oxygen (O2).
