Abstract :
Widespread economic and physical development creates changes to the environment and exposes human beings to greater environmental disaster risks. The conversion of extensive forest cover into urban, settlement and industry uses transforms and disturbs the working of the natural systems and precipitates adverse environmental impacts. This study examined the extent of land use changes in the Kelantan River Basin using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine the actual vicinity and type of major changes in land use incurred by accelerated development there. Results of the study showed that land use changes had occurred significantly in the Kelantan River Basin for the past 26 years. This was further evidenced lately by increases in flood disasters frequency in the basin.
