Abstract
WSNs are used in a number of domains that handle sensitive information as in military field. Due to this, there are many considerations that should be investigated related to protecting sensitive information traveling between nodes. Security in WSNs is not easy; compared with conventional networks. Severe challenges exist due to sensors having limited processing power, storage, bandwidth, and energy. Key management is the core issue of any security approaches, in which it faces many challenges within limited resources WSN nodes as distributing and managing secret keys, and network misbehavior in case of nodes capturing. We have proposed a novel key management scheme for WSNs based on hierarchical deterministic approach, and then we have analyzed the security properties of a novel proposed scheme. In this paper, using Network Simulator -2 (NS-2), we evaluate the novel proposed scheme according to other recent previous proposed schemes in metrics of scheme performance represented in terms of key storage overhead and communication overhead, and some other important metrics as power consumption, scalability, and simplicity
