Abstract :
This study is an in-depth textual and contextual study of the novel Orang Kota Bharu authored by the national laureate S. Othman’s Kelantan. The focus of the study is the identification of the type of rhetoric and rhetoric elements used in the novel. The researcher employs modern rhetoric developed by Enos and Brown (1993) to explicate meaning. Finding suggest that the author places importance on rhetoric of a narrative structure. The theme in the novel forwards history of the Kelantan people and discusses issues related to independences, politics and economies and religious and social issues. The study also showed that the author used metaphorical elements, such as anaphoric, repeten, epiphora, simile, personification, hyperbola, and hybrid language as choices for figurative language effectively. This seems to show that these language element helped in making the language ‘soft’. However this means that a high level of critical and logical thinking is required for a true appreciation of the novel.
