Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to identify primary school pupils’ levels of proportional reasoning while solving proportional problems. This qualitative case study involved seven of Year Five students (aged 11) who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using clinical interview technique can show the pupils’ strategies and in-depth justification for each activity is shown. This article presents the analysis of the pupils’ responses related to ratios comparing tasks. The findings of this study showed that the level of pupils’ reasoning is consistent with the levels proposed by previous researchers, which pupils have at least the informal proportional reasoning level, while the quantitative proportional reasonig level is the highest level. However the findings also found that pupils’ responses that cannot be classified in any of the levels of proportional reasoning, resulting in a new level between the level of informal proportional reasoning and quantitative proportional reasoning level. The findings of this study may provide information to primary school mathematics teachers that every student has different level of reasoning and teachers need to diversify activities to encourage students think proportionally.
