Abstract :
The objective of this paper is to show that passive tuned mass dampers can be used to suppress galloping of tall cantilever structures due to wind by raising the magnitude of the critical mean wind speed. A two dimensional analysis is presented in which the proper direction of motion of the tuned mass damper on the structure is determined. The cases of using one tuned mass damper allowed to move along the mean wind direction, one tuned mass damper allowed to move in the cross mean wind direction and two tuned mass dampers, one is allowed to move along the mean wind direction and the other is allowed to move in the cross mean wind direction, are investigated. It is shown that the tuned mass damper which moves in the cross mean wind direction is effective in increasing the critical mean wind speed and can be used to suppress galloping
