Abstract :
Various events take place every day. However, not all these events become news (Fleming et al. 2006; Lippmann (1950); 2006). Consequently, the fundamental question that is often asked is What makes an event on the news?. To answer this question, a lot of media studies were conducted to examine and identify news value criteria that implicitly and explicitly influence the decision making news. However, many investigations focused only on quantitative studies, particularly content analysis (Galtung Ruge 1965; Harcup O Neil 2001). This study attempts to investigate the news in the Malaysian press through qualitative research through interviews with journalists. This approach sees the news from the perspective of the individuals involved in making the news (Harrison 2006). Here, the study of fundamental questions in journalism is not a trivial issue and become an attempt to regenerate the power of knowledge in the Malaysian media. This study explores the perspectives of media practitioners as the main actors in the process of making news who is able to give a deeper analysis in answering fundamental questions in science journalism in the local context .
