Abstract :
Generic skills evaluation for students in Higher Learning Institutions (HLI) had been discussed when the Malaysian Qualification Framework (MQF) was carried out in 2006. The purpose of this study is to validate and examine the reliability of a self-report instrument namely Generic Skills Instrument for Higher Education (GeSIHE 2008). Data are presented from 1,262 undergraduate students randomly chosen from 12 faculties at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The instrument (GeSIHE) used consists of 13 construct with 77 items on a five point likert scale. Amos software version 7 has been used for data analysis. The analysis on the Comparative of Fit Index (CFI), Tucker Lewis Index (TLI), and RMSEA s value has been used to drop and maintain the items. The final analysis using measurement model in confirmatory factor analysis has dropped 15 items and maintained 62 items legitimately trusted and reliable to gauge 13 constructs in GeSIHE. This GeSIHE s instrument could be used to obtain HLI students profile as indicator to increase student generic skills during their study in the university.
