Abstract :
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if plasma thrombomodulin levels, a glycoprotein found on the surface of the endothelial cell, are elevated in pregnant women with preeclampsia and if these levels correlated with other features of disease severity. Materials and Methods: Parameters were compared in three groups of singleton naturally conceived women: (I) 22 patients with mild preeclampsia,(ii) 20 patients with severe preeclampsia, and (III) 20 normotensive pregnant women. Results: Thrombomodulin level, prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time levels were significantly elevated in patients with severe preeclampsia compared to patients with mild preeclampsia and normotensive pregnant women. There was significant negative correlation between thrombomodulin level and fibrinogen level as well as platelet. While no significant correlation between thrombomodulin and prothrombin time. Conclusion: It is thus suggested that plasma thrombomodulin levels are elevated in severe preeclampsia, reflecting a vascular endothelial damage, there was significant positive correlation between thrombomodulin level and systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure and partial thromboplastin time.
