Abstract :
The role of landscape elements in enhancing the physical settings of any urban environment has been proven throughout most of the literature. This role is of great importance when dealing with highly sensitive areas such as conservation areas, as the discourse of compatibility and coherence between the proposed new landscape elements and the existing potentials of conservation areas, represented in its urban qualities, is of great significance. This paper aims to investigate the relation between urban qualities for conservation areas and the physical variables of urban landscape elements as a matter of passivity and activity. This is to be achieved through discussing the discourses of urban quality in conservation areas and the importance of qualitative assessment of such qualities and their relative impact upon the landscape features. Moreover, the research is trying to configure an assessment approach to quantify urban qualities corresponding to the landscape features in conservation areas. 150 participants were asked to rank the passive and active relations through a formative scenario analysis. Finally, a better understanding of the relation between setting s qualities and urban landscape variables is elaborated which in turn can help in ensuring the quality of landscape proposals in other conservation settings.
