Abstract :
This work deals with the study of leaf and fruit morphological variations of 14 species belonging to Papaveraceae s.s., 7 species belonging to Fumariaceae s.s. and 2 species from Hypecoaceae s.s. in order to asses the new classification of the Papaveraceae s.l.. The results showed that these three families are closely related according to leaf characters which support the previous findings for combining them into single family. Fruit characters are more helpful in the identification of the genera and support the combination of Fumariacea and Hypecoaceae in a single subfamily Fumaroideae, while subfamily Papaveroideae has related genera with both capsules or siliquas and similar leaf characters. Systematic relation of family Papaveraceae s.s. with other families according to the new data derived from molecular analysis has been discussed to clarify the taxonomic position of the family within the basal eudicots
