Abstract :
Abstract:Walnut septum has been widely used in Iranian traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. In this study, we investigated the hypoglycemic effects of walnut alcoholic extracts septum on serum glucose in streptozocin-induced diabetic adult male rats. Alcoholic extract of septum from walnut was found to have potent antidiabetic activity that reduces blood sugar level in streptozocin-induced diabetic male rats. Supplementing this alcoholic extract by gavage at doses of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 g/kg at 0.5 ml distilled water in diabetic rats result in a significant diminution of blood glucose level after 14 days of continuous supplementation.Continuous supplementation of this extract for 14 days did not result in significant differences in serum insulin in diabetic rats. Activities of serum aminotransaminase enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), did not change can significantly in the alcoholic extract supplemented group with respect to control group. Therefore it can be stated that the extract is non –toxic to the mammalian cells. The present study demonstrates that alcoholic extract of walnut septum possesses significant antihyperglicemic properties, thus suggesting its beneficial effect in the treatment of diabetes.
