Abstract :
The article discusses the need for universities worldwide to achieve academic excellence in their role as institutions of higher learning. This is crucial if they want to remain ahead in the climax of increasing globalization and competitiveness. By being highly competitive and ranked highly among world academic institutions, universities can hope to gain a host of benefits including attracting brilliant staff, excellent students and generous funding for research projects. The article argues that one of the critical ingredients that can help universities towards achieving such a goal is the mastery of a global language of education and technology amongst their academicians and students. However, this is by no means the sole factor that can propel success; other elements do play their parts as well. Consequently, university authorities would have to scrutinize their own respective circumstances and objectives and come up with their own strategies.
