Abstract :
Soma, which is located in the province Manisa and the Bakırçay Basin, is one of the prominent cities of the region due to its various features. As for population, Soma has the highest population among the other cities (Soma, Bergama, Kırkağaç, Kınık, Dikili ve Savaştepe) in the Bakırçay Basin. Soma as a mining town attracts attention with its fastdeveloping industrial activities, which is the cause of the increase in the population and correspondingly gives birth to various urban activities. The primary concern of the study is to reveal how effective mining is in the emergence and modification of these functions in Soma. Data on annual population variations in parallel with the developments in mining are used for the purpose of the study. Growth rates in the population are calculated and analyzed in terms of age distribution. Commercial and industrial activities which have been brought about as a result of the developments in urban features and the effects of transportation on these particular activities are discussed. Further, the sectoral distribution of employed population in the urban population is handled. So as to produce data on the underground resources of the area, analyses of geographical location and geographical features of the area are included in the study. Besides, various tables, figures and photographs are provided in the study.
