The Effectiveness Of Literary Text In Enhancing The Performance Of Malay Language Writing Among Students

Writing skill is the most difficult skill to be taught and mastered by a student. Hence, this research aimed to analyse the effectiveness of the usage of literary texts on the essay writing performance of 64 Form Two average achiever students. This experimental research was conducted to compare the effectiveness of using literary text and the conventional method in the teaching of composition writing. Both groups were given two tests, namely pre-test and post-test to compare the Performance of the overall composition , elaboration of points and sentences type usage. The research findings of the pre-test showed that for the overall composition, the mean score for the experimental group was 53.87 (SD = 9.40) and the mean score for the control group was 48.65 (SD = 7.40). The t-test showed there was a significant mean score difference, with t(31) = 2.840, p .05. As for the post-test, the mean score for the experimental group showed 60.2 (SD =10.44), and the control group showed 51.28 (SD = 8.53). The analysis of the t-test showed that there was a significant mean score difference between the students in overall composition with t(31) = 4.532, p .05. As a conclusion, the teaching of composition writing using the literature text is proven to be more effective than the conventional method. Therefore, it is hoped the findings of this research could encourage the Malay language teachers to use the literature text more effectively to help students to generate ideas to produce better composition.
