Abstract :
The aim of the study is to (i) identify the generic skills inculcated by Malay Language teachers in the teaching and learning of the Malay language (ii) determine the significant differences in generic skills application between male teachers and female teachers, and (iii) determine the significant relationship between teaching experience and generic skills application in the teaching and learning of the Malay Language. This survey used the instrument of a questionnaire which was conducted on 120 Malay Language teachers in the Kluang district who were chosen through purposive sampling. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, and Pearson correlation. The survey results show that the generic skills inculcated by the Malay Language teachers in the Kluang district are ethical and moral skills. Meanwhile skills in using technology are less inculcated. The survey results also show that there is no difference in generic skills application between male teachers and female teachers. Nevertheless, the study shows that no significant relationship exists between teaching experience and inculcation of generic skills application in the teaching and learning of the Malay Language. The implications of this study are that it has contributed to the teacher’s pedagogy and the indication that language teachers have the task and huge responsibility in the context of language teaching. To ensure that the objective is achieved, teachers must be equipped with knowledge and generic skills.
