The Implementation of Communicative Activities in Malay Language Teaching in Primary School: A Case Study

Abstract :
The aim of the research was to determine the approach of Malay Language teacher in carrying out the communicative activity in their teaching process. The design of the study was a case study using qualitative approach. The sample involved in the research was three Malay Language teachers and 25pupils of year five in one school in Terengganu. The data was collected intensively through observation and interview. All the data collected had been analyses inductively. The finding of the research had indicated seven criterion used or practiced by the teachers in communicative activity while teaching bahasa Melayu. This criterion is the adaptation of the communicative continuum activity introduced by Hamer and the communicative principle activity by Johnson (1982). The seven criterion based on the suitability in teaching Malay Language are communication need, the aim of communication, the content but not the structure, varieties of language structures, no teacher’s interference, no material control and jigsaw. The findings of this study gave the implication towards the implimentation of pedagogy in teaching oral skill to the primary school students.
