Abstract :
The aim of this study is to explore the problem “What inferences do undergraduateMathematics students make from visuals evoking addition-subtraction operations and unioncomplementoperations in sets?” Survey method was chosen in this study. Data were collectedin the spring semester of the academic year, 2010-2011with an Information Collection Formswhich is applied to 239 university students enrolled in Education and Science and LiteratureFaculty locating in a medium-sized province of Eastern Anatolian Region. Collected data wereanalyzed in a descriptive way. High majority of the students stated that they faced the imagesin their previous primary education in learning addition and subtraction, and these images would be useful in teaching addition and subtraction with modeling. It is suggested to considerthat usage of these images in instruction process can also have negative effects on students’understanding operations among sets.
