Abstract :
The aim of this study is to show the teachers an alternative exemplary practice on studying the subject “An Analysis of a Period: Nutuk” in the unit called ‘The Steps for Modern Turkey’ of the eighth – grade course called ‘The Turkish Revolution History and Kemalism’ and to reveal the students’ opinions about this process. The action research of the qualitative research methods was used in this research. The descriptive analysis and the document analysis were used to analyse the research data. The working group of the research consisted of 24 eighth – grade students attending a secondary school in the centre of Ankara. The suitable sample method of the intentional sample methods was used in choosing the participants. According to the results of the study, it was determined that the students expressed on Nutuk as the main work to understand our past and to learn our history and that they saw Nutuk as a guiding way to appreciate the value of the Republic. In addition, according to the results of the research, it was seen that creative drama had a positive effect on understanding the conditions of that historical period and evaluating the events by empathising with historical characters.
