Abstract :
The purpose of the present study is to develop a valid and reliable scale to be used for measuring prospective music teachers’ motivations for individual instrument classes. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the scale contained 25 items loaded under three sub-scales. Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients for the sub-scales were as follows: 0. 90 for lack of motivation, 0. 88 for achievement motivation, and 0. 76 for motivation for studying. Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients for the whole scale was found .77. The confirmatory factor analysis, which followed the exploratory factor analysis, tested the three-factor structure and confirmed that the model had considerably decent goodness-of-fit indices. The findings suggest that the Motivation for Individual Instrument Classes Scale can be used for measuring prospective music teachers’ motivations for instrument classes in a valid and reliable manner.
