Abstract :
The aim of this study is to do clinical analysis of patients who developed fat embolism syndrome(FES) following long bone fractures after trauma. Eight patients with fat embolism syndromeare followed and cured in intensive care units of our clinic from 1998 to 2006. In all patients, fat embolism syndrome was diagnosed based on their anamnesis, clinical situations and their radiographic, arterial blood gases and laboratory findings. Corticosteroid was given in all patients. In six patients, mechanic ventilator support was needed. In any patients, pneumothorax and/or pneumomediastenium was not developed associated with mechanic ventilator. Seven patients were treated successfully but one died because of infectious complication. Even though fat embolism syndrome is a adult respiratory distress syndrome variant (ARDS), FES has better prognosis than other ARDS variants. Mortality is approximately %8. It is important that the diagnosis and required treatment should be done as soon as possible.
