Abstract :
Being exposed to periodontal diseases causes alteration in the structural integrity and the biochemical structure of cementum. Alterations occuring in the morphology of cementum in the advanced ages and the effects of periodontal diseases have an importance in terms of various clinical applications. Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to determine morphometrically whether the thickness of cementum differs in two different age groups over 45 year-old (aged between 45-50 and over 50 year-old) diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. For this purpose, measurements of the cementum thickness were determined on histological sections of the extracted teeth belonging to aforementioned two groups, in the middle point of the apical half of dental root, in the middle point of the length of dental root and in the middle point of the cervical half of dental root. No statistically significant difference was detected between the two groups in the comparison of the mean of the thickness of cementum acquired from the measurements. Further research is required on how periodontal diseases affect the morphology of cementum in terms of correlation between cementum and periodontal damage in clinical applications and in terms of studies on development of cementum with regenerative technique.
