Abstract :
Tounderstandin-depthmaterialproperties,manufacturing, andconservationinculturalheritageartefacts,thereisastrongneedforadvancedcharacterizationtoolsthatenableanalysisdowntothenanometricscale. Transmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM)andelectrondiffraction(ED)techniques,like3DprecessionelectrondiffractiontomographyandASTAR phase/orientationmapping,areproposedtostudyculturalheritagematerialsatnanoscale.Inthiswork,weshowhowelectroncrystallographyinTEM helpstodetermineprecisestructuralinformationandphase/orientationdistributionofvariouspigmentsinculturalheritagematerialsfromvarioushistoricalperiodslikeGreekamphorisks,Romanglasstesserae,andpre-HispanicMayamuralpaintings.SuchTEM-basedmethodscanbeanalternativetosynchrotrontechniquesandcanallowdistinguishingaccuratelydifferentcrystallinephasesevenincasesofidenticalorveryclosechemicalcompositionsatthenanometricscale.
