Abstract :
ThispaperdealswiththedevelopmentofamultidisciplinarystudyonthecurrentstateofconservationofthefacadeoftheArciprestalChurchofSantaMaríadeMorella(Castellón,Spain), aworkoftheGothicperiodofgreathistoricalandartisticvalue. Theaimofthisdiagnosiswastoundertakethepreventiveconservationactionsrequiredandincreasetheknowledgeabouttheconservationofpaintingsonstones. Duringthediagnosisscanning,electronmicroscopywasdemonstratedtobeavaluableanalyticalmethodforwallpaintingsonstone. Thefacade,whichsinceitsconstructionhasnotundergonemajorarchitecturalchanges,hasreachedourdaysasitwasconfiguredinitscreation,addingthetracesofthepassageoftimeandinterventionsthathavesufferedpolychromies.Becauseoftheconservationsituation,itwasdecidedtohaveaninterdisciplinaryprojectforthestructuralstudyofthework,anexhaustivestudyofthematerialsandtheirstateofconservation. Thestudyofthematerialsincludestheidentificationofstonesupports,mortars,thepictorialtechniqueoftheoriginalandaddedpolychromies,andthesuperficialpatinas.On-sitestudieswerecarriedoutbygroundpenetrationradar(GPR)andX-rayfluorescence(XRF). Amongthetechniquesusedinlaboratorywereopticalpolarizedlightmicroscopy(MO-LP),X-raydiffraction(XRD), scanningelectronmicroscopywithmicroanalysis(SEM-EDX)andFourier-transforminfraredspectroscopy(FTIR). Thestudyallowedtodeterminethedifferentpathologiesofalterationanddegradationofstonesubstrateandpolychromies,chromaticalterations,biologicalpatinas,etc. Duringthisstudy,itwasdemonstratedthatthediagnosisofwallpaintingsisacomplexissuethatneedstobeaddressedinamultidisciplinaryapproach,wherescanningelectronmicroscopywithmicroanalysisisthekeymethodologytogetadeeperunderstandingofsubsurfacecharacterizationofwallpaintingsandhighlighttheweatheringprocesses.Inasecondphaseofpreviousstudies,thistechnique(SEM) hasbeenusedinassessingtheviabilityofconsolidationsystemsandcleaningboththestoneandthepolychrome.
