Abstract :
Scanningmicroscopytechniqueshaveemergedaspowerfulscientifictoolsforanalysingmaterialsofarchitecturalorarchaeologicalinterest, sincethecommercializationofthefirstscanningelectronmicroscopyinstrumentationintheearly60s. Thisstudyisaimedatreviewingandhighlightingthesignificanceofseveralscanningmicroscopytechniquesemployedintheprotectionofbuiltheritage. Thediffusionofscanningelectronmicroscopywithenergy-dispersiveX-rayspectroscopyanalysis(SEM-EDX) isproventobethewidestamongtheavailablescanningmicroscopytechniques, whiletransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM) applicationsaresteadilypresentinthefieldofbuiltheritageprotection.
