Abstract
Theeffectofmicrostructureonmacropropertiesofbuildingmaterialswastheinitiationinordertousemicroscopictechniquesforstudyingthematerials’behavior.Primerroleamongthedifferenttechniqueshasthescanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)asitprovidesmuchinformationinaneasyandunderstandableway.SEMhasbeenusedinalmosteverystudyofthelastdecades,dealingwithhistoricandrepairmaterialstocompletetheanalysisperformed.Inthecaseofhistoricmortars,itisauniquetechniqueasitrequiresasmallrepresentativesampleandwithoutanyintensetreatmentimportantinformationderivedfromanalmostunknownsampleincludingdamagedetection,phaseidentification,andmicroanalysis.Itisusuallyacomplementarymethodofanalysisbutapreciousoneasthegainedresultsfromtheanalysisofoldmortarsareusedfordesigningcompatiblerepairmaterialsforrestorationpurposes.Inthepaper,thelong-termuseofSEMinstudyingbotholdauthenticandinnovativerepairmortarsispresented
