Abstract :
Whileseveralmaterialsandtechniqueshavebeenusedtoassessthequalityofrootcanalfillingsinmicro-CTimages,thelackofstandardizationinscanningprotocolshasproducedconflictingresults.Hence,theaimofthisstudywastodetermineacutoffvoxelsizevaluefortheassessmentofrootcanalfillingvoidsinmicro-CTandnano-CTimages.Twentyfreshlyextractedmandibularcentralincisorswereused.RootcanalswerepreparedwithnickeltitaniumfilestoanISOsize40/0.06taperandthenfilledwithasinglecone(40/0.06taper)andAHPlussealer.Theteethwerescannedwithdifferentvoxelsizeswitheithermicro-CT(5.2,8.1,11.2,and16.73μm)ornano-CT(1.5and5.0μm)equipment.ImageswerereconstructedandanalyzedwiththeNReconandCTAnsoftware.Voidproportionandvoidvolumewerecalculatedforeachtoothintheapical,middle,andcoronalthirdsoftherootcanal.Kruskal-WallisandposthocMann–WhitneyUtestswereperformedwithasignificancelevelof5%.Inmicro-CTimages,significantlydifferentresultsweredetectedamongthetestedvoxelsizesforvoidproportionandvoidvolume,whereasnosuchdifferenceswerefoundinnano-CTimages(p>005).Micro-CTimagesshowedhighervoidnumbersovertheentirerootlength,withstatisticallysignificantdifferencesbetweenthevoxelsizeof16.73μmandtheothersizes(p<005).Thevaluesofthedifferentnano-CTvoxelsizesdidnotsignificantlydifferfromthoseofthemicro-CT(5.2,8.1,and11.2μm),exceptforthevoxelsizeof16.73μm(p<005).Alltestedvoxelsizesenabledthedetectionofrootcanalfillingvoidsexceptforthevoxelsizeof16.73μm.Bearinginmindthelimitationsofthisstudy,itseemsthatavoxelsizeof11.2μmcanbeusedasareliablecutoffvaluefortheassessmentofrootcanalfillingvoidsinmicro-CTimaging.
