Validation of the Revised Knox Preschool Play Scale for the Brazilian Population

Playisessentialtochilddevelopment,anditsevaluationisconsideredvalidtoindicatethestageofdevelopmentofthe childandindicatepossiblelagging.TheRevisedKnoxPreschoolPlayScale(RKPPS)providesanevolvingdescriptionofthetypical playbehaviorofpreschoolchildren,insix-monthperiodsfromzerotothreeyearsofageandtheninannualperiodsuptosixyears ofage.TheRKPPShasalreadyundergonetheprocessofculturaladaptationforuseintheBrazilianpopulation,anditisnecessary toanalyzeitsapplicability.Aims.ToverifythereliabilityandinternalconsistencyoftheRKPPSforBrazilianchildren.Method.135 childrenparticipatedinthestudy,dividedintodifferentagegroupswith15ineachgroup,andwerefilmedduringfreeplayin schoolorhomecontexts.Twoindependentratersevaluatedthefootagefromtwodifferenttimes.Basedontheseevaluations,a statisticalanalysiswascarriedoutinordertoascertainthereliabilityandtheinternalconsistencyoftheBrazilianversionof theRKPPS.Results.Intra-andinterraterreliabilityshowedapredominanceofnear-perfecttomoderateagreement;however, somedimensionsofcertainagegroupspresentedreasonabletopooragreement.Theinternalconsistencywasfoundtobe satisfactoryformostoftheitemsevaluated;however,therewereitemswithpoorresultsinsomedimensionsofcertainage groups.Conclusions.Thereisaneedforfurtheranalysisoftheseitemsbyacommitteeofexpertstoensurethereproducibility oftheinstrument.
