Abstract :
Schwannomas are benign tumors originating from schwann cells of neural sheaths. Although they are usually located head, neck or flexor surfaces of upper extremities, only 3 % of them are located in retroperitoneum. The mass can reach a large size before the diagnosis due to expandible nature of retroperitoneum. They are often misdiagnosed as adnexial masses or leiomyomas due to lack of specific symptoms and patognomonic imaging features. Complete surgical excision with the preservation of the nerves is the treatment of choice but special attention should be paid during dissection since they are adjacent to sacral venous plexus, and often have extensive blood supply. Here we present a case of a retroperitoneal schwannoma, misdiagnosed as leiomyoma before surgery, which exists with cystadenofibroma, a rare tumor of the ovary, and a giant leiomyoma.
