Abstract :
During the field survey it became evident that several branded and many home made skin-lightening creams are available in the Saudi market. Eighty-eight different samples were collected and analyzed for the presence of mercury because it was reported to be toxic. Shimadzu AA-6800 Atomic Absorption spectrometer with HVG-1 hydride vapour generator was used in the present study. The FDA limit for thepresence of mercury in skin-lightening creams is 1 ppm. About 60% of the samples analyzed containedmercury to be much higher than the FDA permissible limit. The use of such creams may lead to health hazards. Therefore, it is recommended that all skin-lighting creams should be checked for mercury levels,before marketing.

ثبت خلال عملية المعاينة أنه يوجد في السوق السعودي من كريمات تبييض الجلد ذات العلامات التجارية و المصنعة محليا و قد تم تجميع 88 عينة مختلفة و تم تحليلها للتحقق من وجود الزئبق فيها، حيث أثبتت التحاليل أن هذه الكريمات قد تكون سامة و قد تم استخدام مقياس الامتصاص الذري Shimadzu aa-6800 مع مولد بخار الهيدريد HVG-1 في هذه الدراسة و وفقا لما حددته منظمة الغذاء و الدواء الأمريكية (FDA) فإن الحد المسموح به من الزئبق في كريم تبييض الجلد يساوي جزء واحد في المليون و لكن حوالي 60 % من العينات التي تم تحليلها تحتوي على نسبة زئبق أعلى من النسبة المقررة من قبل منظمة FDA لذلك فان استخدام مثل هذه الكريمات قد يعرض الصحة للخطر لذلك فإنه تمت الإفادة بضرورة تحليل كريمات تبييض الجلد قبل تسويقها لمعرفة مقدار الزئبق فيها
