Abstract :
Shopping is an activity that occurs in all countries. Proper planning and development of shopping centre are necessary in order to provide good accessibility to the community. This study was conducted to analyse the distribution pattern of shopping centres in the Klang Valley and to determine the classification of shopping centres that were built in the area. Field survey was conducted in order to identify the location of shopping centres in the Klang Valley and to classify them. Classification of shopping centre is divided into neighbourhood, community, specialty, regional, super regional and hypermarkets. The study areas are West Klang Valley, East Klang Valley, North Klang Valley, South Klang Valley, and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The results show that the current distribution of shopping centres in the Klang Valley are scattered in various regions. Location of shopping centres in the West Klang Valley shows similarity to the locational pattern for shopping centres in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is still a major locational to shopping centre in the Klang Valley. In accordance to the population distribution, the region of East Klang Valley, North Klang Valley and South Klang Valley have evidently locating several classifications of shopping centres. These findings can be used by the authorities for planning and development of shopping centres in the future.
