Progesterone is essential for the development ofdecidual tissues, and if fertilization occurs, high circulating progesterone levels are important not only for facilitatingimplantation, but also for maintaining pregnancy by stimulating uterine growth and opposing the actions of factorsinvolved in myometrial contraction.
