Abstract
From the whole plant of Silybum marianum Gaerth five terpenoids, four steroids and four flavonoids were isolated. The structure of these com-pounds were established by spectroscopic (UV, IR, 1D-NMR, and FAB-MS) methods. All of them have been isolated for the first time from the genus Silybum. Compounds 1-9 showed moderate to potent antifungal activity while the flavonoids (10-13) showed free radical scavenging activity which was deter-mined using the radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrydrazyl (DPPH), spectroscopically.
