Abstract :
The work reports the analyses of groundwater and some surface water samples from taluka Nawabshah, district Nawabshah, located at the center of Sindh province. The results of physical and chemical parameters of the water samples were found in the following ranges, pH 6.64-8.87, TDS 153-8429 mg/L, chloride 22-2817 mg/L, alkalinity-M 52-1225 mg/L, hardness 80-2440 mg/L, dissolved oxygen 1.5-7.2 mg/L, SO4 21-3171 mg/L, NO2-N 0.01-1.155 mg/L, NO3-N 0.05-2.33 mg/L, ortho-phosphate (P) 0.003-0.29 mg/L, total phosphate (P) 0.094-1.491 mg/L. The concentration of essential metal ions (Na, Ca, Mg and K) was found in the ranges of 25-1750 mg/L, 16-810 mg/L, 6-333 mg/L and 1-94 mg/L respectively. The results revealed that the majority of ground water samples (52 out of 65) of the study area were not suitable to be used for drinking purpose; on the other hand, 47 water samples based on sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) were found suitable to be used for irrigation purposes.
