Abstract :
Arad is a rising modern town a few kilometers west of the Dead Sea. Founded only in 1961 it has attractive residential districts and in its barren surroundings has something of the aspect of a green oasis. Its altitude and desert climate, with dry and pollen-free air, make it an ideal resort for sufferers from asthma. The existing spa facilities are to be developed to make Arad an international medical center. The town is best known, however, for the important archeological site on Tel Arad, which is located approximately 8 km from Arad. Additionally, Arad belongs to Israel s Second Generation New Towns that represent a developed generation in planning and execution. The town s growth has closely followed a well-designed city plan. It was given the status of a city on June 29, 1995. In addition, many of the planning and architectural concepts being tested in Arad already were spreading in many other places in Israel. The Arad projects also pioneered new methods for on-site mass production manufacturing of building parts. Furthermore, Arad spans an area of 90,000 dunams (90 km2), one of the largest municipal areas in Israel, even though its urban area is much smaller. Arad also has a commercial landing strip located slightly to the south of its urban area. Moreover, Arad s population was 22,825 residents in 2009 and it reflects the broad spectrum of Israeli society. There are Ashkenazim and Sephardim, secular and religious. Bedouins and Black Hebrews, native-born Israelis and new immigrants. Finally, this paper utilizes a descriptive-analytical method to review and analyze the general characteristics of the Israeli development experiment in the city of Arad.
