Abstract
This paper discusses the use of biomarkers as maturity and palaeoenvironmental indicators. The study is primarily based on organic penological and organic geochemicai data of selected coal and shale samples. The dominance of 11C31 over nC17 suggests a high input of terrestrially-derived organic matter while the occurrence of tricyclic terpanes is indicative of a marine influenced depos.itio.nal condition
