Abstract :
The aim of this work was to study the effect of the heat treatment (Quenching) of 0.37C% medium carbon steel on some of its mechanical properties and corrosion rate. Some of the specimens that were used in this work were heat treated and the others were left without heat treatment. The tests those were carried out in this work on the specimens before and after heat treatment are the impact, and corrosion tests. The test solution used in this study was natural Mediterranean sea water and natural water was used for quenching. From the results obtained, it was found that the heat treated specimens have less corrosion rate and higher yield stress than the non heat treated specimens. Also it was suggested that the formation of martensite after quenching was played role for delaying the corrosion process. Also from the impact test results, it was found that the impact strength of the non hardened specimens was higher than those of hardened specimens.
