Abstract :
Confidentiality of medical records has always been a matter of great concern. Sophisticated databanks of individual and family diseases, based on human genetic information, have exacerbated the problem of privacy As the genetic information becomes easier to be used in digitalized form, public worry about misuse of the information has augmented. This requires an appropriate legal regime so that confidence among the people is generated. Maintaining confidentiality in genetic information is warranted to serve the public, but in certain circumstances, the information has to be disclosed to serve the greater interest of the public. To have a competent legal framework, to generate confidence among the people, and to maintain a balance between keeping the information confidential and to disclose it in the greater degree of public interest are some intricate issues.
