Abstract :
The monumental Gate, called as “The Propylon” in archaeological literature, which is located between Artemision and Agora at Magnesia on the Meander, was discovered during the excavations between 1891 and 1893. The architecture of Propylon was introduced by the publication “Magnesia on the Meander” in 1904. Since the discovery of the structure, different scholars have written many researches about it. These studies that lasted almost a century, until the results of the second excavations period between 1993 and 1999, have resulted to date the Propylon of Magnesia to a very long time period from the Hellenistic age through the Roman era. They also brought the dating of Propylon into question. The main purpose of this article is to suggest a more precise date for Propylon, through part of new finds chosen for the scope of this study and in light of typological and stylistic features of architectural decorations, anthemion, lesbos and ion cymatiums and akanthus patterns.
