PHONETIC ASPECTS OF WORDS OF EASTERN ORIGIN IN TURKISH DIALECTS -CONSONANTS-

Words of Eastern origin should be one of the subjects of Turkish dialect research and studies. Words of Eastern origin have, in comparison with other loan words, a particular place and historical background in Turkish vocabulary. There are many words of Eastern origin borrowed from Arabic and Persian in Turkish dialects as in the written language. Many of these words surviving in dialects drifted away from their original form through a variety of sound changes and conformed to the sound characteristics of Turkish. Thus, in this study words of Eastern origin used in Turkish dialects have been phonetically examined. The study collected many examples of words of Eastern origin and showed consonant changes in these words. To this end, 48 books were selected among works on dialects published from 1940 to 2013 and sample words were scanned from these books. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the use of words of Eastern origin in Turkish dialects, to outline sound events in sample words and to try to determine how the people of Anatolia pronounce Arabic and Persian words in dialects and what changes they make when using these words.
